Tokimeki Memorial 4 v0.44: playtesting to August

This round was different. Instead of checking screens one at a time, I sat down and played Tokimeki Memorial 4 in English, from the first day of school all the way to the start of summer break. I picked Hoshikawa Maki, went on a few dates, lost a lot of races on purpose so I could screenshot them, and wrote down everything that still looked off.

Three patches later (v0.42, v0.43 and now v0.44), most of that list is fixed.

The startup notice in English, framed by two chibi girls, explaining that Tokimeki Memorial 4 autosaves its system data and not to remove the Memory Stick while saving.

English from the very first screen

The autosave notice you see before the title screen is English now, and so is the title menu, including Omake.

The title menu over a blurred school background with the buttons New Game, Continue, Options, Install, Network and Omake.

The phone

The newsletter ads were already in English, but the small text on them was blurry when the phone stretched it to fill the screen. All 42 cards got clearer lettering, and the little notes in the corner are easier to read.

The phone showing a Kirameki News spotlight ad titled "Summer means the beach!" with a photo of the sea and a short English description.

The phone showing a concert ad for Midsummer Rock Fest with the schedule, price in RICH and a stage photo.

Calling someone now asks "Call Okura Miyako?" in English, and the Inbox shows full names instead of cutting them off at seven letters.

The phone book with a pop-up asking "Call Okura Miyako?" and Yes and No buttons.

Hoshikawa Maki's profile card on the phone, listing her birthday, blood type, club and height, with the line "Gives her all to everything. The most popular girl in class."

Sports day

The sports festival minigames are where a lot of the pictures I'd redrawn finally got tested for real. The race starts with "On your marks!", runners have English name tags, and the chalkboards explaining the controls are clean now. My earlier version left a smudge where the Japanese used to be.

The 100m dash at the sports festival with chibi runners lined up, English name tags, and "On your marks!" in big orange letters.

Maki in her gym clothes in front of a green chalkboard that reads "Controls ~100m Dash~", with a little demo of chibi runners crouched at the start line while the coach watches.

Lots of little things

  • The Join Club screen shows the club names in English.
  • The item shop and Dress Up screens got checked in game.
  • The Japanese quote brackets around spoken lines and menu choices are gone.
  • The exam results sheet, the skill menu tabs and the minigame rankings got English labels.
  • The amusement spot is now the Game Center, with its prize corner and video game corner.
  • Date invitations read naturally, like "later this month on day 31".

The Item Shop with tabs for Bottoms, Pocket, Accessories and Goods, and a list of clothes with prices like Casual Shirt 10R.

What's next

Playing for real showed me a few bigger things to fix: name entry needs a rework, there are faint lines under some text, and the game froze once right after saving. Those come next, along with more of the story text.

There's no patch to download yet. When there is, I'll announce it here.

Unofficial and made for fun.
