Tokimeki Memorial 3 v0.25: the town magazine and a first date

Patch v0.25 is built. The last post took you from a new game to your first weekend. Since then I've played on into the spring, and a lot of the work went into pictures: the places where the Japanese is drawn right into the art.

My first date

I finally played far enough to go on a date with Makihara, and the game froze the morning of it. Every time.

The Today's Plan box in your room was built for a short Japanese name like 牧原さん. Written in English, "Makihara-san" takes twice the room, so the text ran past the space the game set aside for it and the game locked up trying to copy it. The box now says "Makihara - Date," and the day plays out the way it should: pick an outfit, head out, and try not to keep her waiting.

The player's bedroom on Sunday, April 28. A bubble labeled Today's Plan reads "Makihara - Date," and the cursor rests on a heart icon labeled Date. The stat bar shows Humanities, Sciences, Arts, Athletics, Stamina, Guts, Stress and Broadcasting.

A sunny bus stop at Hilltop Park. Makihara, a girl with short red hair, yellow ribbons and a light yellow jacket, stands in the center. The text box reads: Duniphin "Hey, Makihara-san. Did I keep you waiting?"

About 500 short menu names went English in the same patch, including every date spot, so you're off to Hilltop Park now. A few of the lines around them, like "Let's go to Hilltop Park!", are still Japanese for now. They sit in a different part of the game, and I'm working on them next.

Moegino Watcher

The computer in your room has a little web browser, and its best bookmark is Moegino Watcher, the town's events magazine. Twelve issues come out over your three years of high school, and every page is one big picture covered in Japanese: banners, ads, little hand-drawn signs, even words running down the side of the page.

All twelve issues are in English now. That's 278 bits of text, each one painted out and redrawn to match the page.

The spring issue of Moegino Watcher before and after. On the left the page is all Japanese. On the right the same page reads Blossom Viewing at Hilltop Park, Flea Market Today, Come visit Nosaki Highland Farm, and CLAMS running down the side, with the caption "All about the best cherry spot, the hill park! The blossoms last until late April."

The magazine has a sense of humor. The clam digging ad warns that shells are sharp, so beach sandals are best. Konami slipped in a few of its own things too, like a Konami Cup and a DanceDanceRevolution parody movie called Paranoia Dance.

Four later issues of Moegino Watcher in English, with ads for a flea market, pro baseball at the Rainbow Dome, a Night Date at Wai Wai World, a Konami Cup, fireworks at Hilltop Park, a Christmas date special and the Shirayuki Ski Area.

Profile cards

The Profile List keeps track of the girls you've met and your rivals. The list and the cards are English now: phone number, affection, height, measurements, birthday, club and notes. The card's PROFILE banner is redrawn too.

Makihara Yukiko's profile card in English, with the PROFILE banner, her portrait, Phone, Affection, Height, B, W and H, Born, Notes and Club: Track. Most values are question marks this early in the game.

Hobby results

Doing a hobby on the weekend pops up a little result message. Those read like "Got Romance Novel!" and "Learned Books Talk!" now, with English names for the 152 items you can collect and the 154 things you can talk about with the girls.

The bedroom with a pop-up message reading "Got Romance Novel!"

What's next

The leftover lines on the way to and from dates, the stat labels in your room, and the other sites in the in-game browser. The story itself is still the long haul.

There's no patch to download yet. When there is, I'll announce it here.

Unofficial and made for fun.
